Bird’s eye view of the 2023/2024 Professional Dinners

The Law Development Centre (LDC) recently hosted a series of professional students’ dinners across its campuses in Lira, Mbarara, and Kampala. These events were organised by the Bar Course Department to celebrate the hard work and achievements of students, foster a sense of community and provide an opportunity for networking and professional development.

Lira Campus Dinner

The dinner at the Lira campus was a memorable evening filled with inspiring speeches and heartfelt congratulations.  Held on July 1, 2024, at the Pauline Hotel, the event kicked off with a welcome address from the Lira Campus Assistant Director, Mr. Herbert Walusimbi, who highlighted the importance of perseverance and dedication in the legal profession. The Director  LDC, Dr Pamela Tibihikirra-Kalyegira, shared insights from her career journey, and emphasised the value of integrity and continuous learning. The students enjoyed a delicious meal and engaged in lively discussions with Professional Advisors and invited guests; making the evening enjoyable and enriching.

Mbarara Campus Dinner

In Mbarara Campus, the professional dinner was an elegant affair, reflecting the campus’ commitment to excellence.  Held on July 3, 2024, at Las Vegas Hotel Garden, the evening began with a networking session, allowing students to connect with legal practitioners and alumni. The highlight of the event was the keynote speech from Principal Judge Emeritus, Justice Yorokamu Bamwine, who shared his experience and provided advice on qualities that make an excellent lawyer. The dinner concluded with an awards ceremony, recognising outstanding LDC Mbarara Campus Champions League achievements and Guild leadership contributions to the campus community. The sense of camaraderie and mutual support was profound, making the dinner a resounding success.

Kampala Campus Dinner

Kampala Campus hosted the largest of the three dinners on July 5, 2024, at Imperial Royal Hotel, bringing together Bar Course students, faculty, and legal professionals from across the city. The event featured a keynote address by Deputy Inspector General of Government Uganda Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, who spoke passionately about the role of young lawyers in shaping the future of justice in Uganda. The students were encouraged to pursue their dreams with determination and to always uphold the principles of fairness and justice. The dinner also included a talent showcase, where students demonstrated their skills in performing arts adding a creative touch to the evening. The event was a perfect blend of formal and informal interactions, leaving attendees inspired and motivated.

Conclusion

The professional students’ dinners at Lira, Mbarara and Kampala campuses were not just about celebrating academic achievements but also about building a strong community of future legal professionals. These events provided students with the opportunity to interact with mentors, gain insights into the legal profession and form lasting connections with their peers. The Law Development Centre’s commitment to supporting and nurturing its students was evident in the meticulous planning and execution of these dinners, ensuring that they were both memorable and impactful.

As the students of LDC prepare to embark on their professional journeys, these dinners served as a reminder of the support and encouragement that surrounds them, reinforcing their resolve to contribute positively to the legal fraternity in Uganda.
