LDC and Law Reform Commission Collaborate to Strengthen Uganda’s Legal Literature

The Law Development Centre (LDC) and the Uganda Law Reform Commission (ULRC) are considering a collaboration on publishing and distributing legal materials. This proposed alliance aims to eliminate duplication and ensure accuracy in publication of legal materials.

The possible partnership was shared during a ULRC courtesy visit to LDC on Monday, Feb. 24, 2024. Dr. Pamela Tibihikirra Kalyegira, Director LDC, emphasised the significance of this collaboration. She noted that ULRC produces numerous reports, and this partnership would open new opportunities for LDC publishers as well as strengthen legal publishing in Uganda.

The purpose of the visit was for ULRC to take a tour of LDC’s printery, share ideas and discuss potential areas of collaboration.

The Secretary of ULRC, Ms. Jackie Akuno, noted that the Commission produces various legal documents, including copies of the Constitution, study reports, the Living Law Journal, indexes, calendars and notebooks. She stressed that working together would enhance the quality of reference materials and improve the accuracy of laws in circulation.

“If we collaborate, we can create high-quality reference materials and ensure that legal documents available to the public are up-to-date and accurate,” she stated.

This collaboration also is expected to minimise errors caused by manual data entry and create a consistent standard for government legal documents. LDC Publishers, known for its expertise in branding and production quality, will play a key role in ensuring that these publications are well-presented and professional.

Additionally, this partnership seeks to enhance efficiency in the publication of acts, legal reports and reference materials, ensuring that legal professionals, scholars and the public have access to credible legal resources.

The Way Forward

With this initiative, LDC Publishers and ULRC reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Uganda’s legal literature. Moving forward, both institutions will establish joint strategies for publishing, distributing, and standardising legal materials.

This partnership is expected to set a new benchmark for legal documentation in Uganda, ensuring that legal materials are produced efficiently, accurately and professionally.
