LDC-Lira team applies learning to capture top moot award

The Law Development Centre (LDC)-Lira Campus team emerged as the overall winner of the Uganda International Humanitarian Law Moot Competition, organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross. This prestigious event, held September 17, 2024, at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, featured teams from various esteemed institutions of higher learning, including Makerere University, Uganda Christian University and the Islamic University in Uganda, Kampala Campus.

The competition, which centered on violations of international humanitarian law, began with the writing phase where teams submitted memorials on a fictitious case.

“This victory was no small feat, and it was a direct reflection of the rigorous training we have been receiving at LDC,” said Ejiku Justine, one of the winning team members. “Our legal writing skills, honed through detailed guidance and practice, gave us the edge we needed to proceed to the semi-finals and beyond.”

Others on the LDC team were Ankunda Sheba and Opifini Gabriella Adebua.

Facing fierce competition, the three-member team persevered through the semi-finals and ultimately advanced to the grand finale. This moment was significant not just for the three, but for LDC as they demonstrated the depth of talent and training they received at the LDC. Their ability to critically analyse complex issues, supported by the trial advocacy skills taught by our dedicated and committed professional advisors, proved invaluable.

Reflecting on this journey, Ejiku says he realised how much this competition means to him.

“It was more than just a contest; it was an opportunity to put into practice the skills we have been building at LDC,” he said. “The competition allowed us to think on our feet, challenge ourselves intellectually, and work under pressure as a team. Winning was not only a validation of our hard work but also a testament to the quality of education and training we’ve received at LDC”

He advised his fellow students to take every opportunity to sharpen their skills through writing, moot court and trial advocacy. He urged them to engage deeply in every lesson, for the skills they gain at LDC are the ones that will set them apart in the professional world. Dedication, discipline, and teamwork are key, and with the support of exceptional mentors at LDC, success was within their reach.

“This victory means a lot to us,” said Opifini. “It’s a testament to our team’s hard work, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. Winning this competition validates our passion and dedication to international humanitarian law. It is also a reminder that teamwork, innovation, and creativity can lead to remarkable achievements.”
