Meet the best overall Bar Course graduate 2022/2023

Aine Linda Agnes emerged the best overall graduate in the Bar Course 2022/2023 cohort. She scored 4.80 CGPA. Our Senior Public Relations Offficer, Frank Obonyo had a one-on- one interview with her.

Congratulations upon successfully hunting the Lion (Bar Course) and most importantly emerging as the best overall student.

Thank you! Successfully hunting the lion is not a child’s play. Anybody who has gone through LDC can attest to that. I, therefore, give glory back to God for blessing me with the opportunity to not only pass the Bar Course but emerge as the best student.

Who is Aine Linda Agnes?

I am a person who finds joy in life’s simple pleasures. I hail from Rubanda District and my parents are: Dr. Ahimbisibwe Emilian and Mrs. Susan Mbabazi. As the firstborn among four siblings, I am always expected to lead by example.

I attended Kampala Parents School for primary education, followed by Uganda Martyrs SS Namugongo for secondary school. I then pursued my undergraduate degree in Law at Makerere University. I attribute much of my academic success to the nurturing environments provided by these educational institutions and I believe they have played a significant role in shaping my identity and achievements.

What was your childhood dream?

As a child, whereas most of my age mates aspired to become medical doctors, I remember wanting to be a judge because of the wigs judges wear and the authority they command. When I found out that the only way to become a judge is to be a lawyer, then this became my dream. I have never wanted to be anything else but a lawyer.

What’s your hobby?

I like watching movies and series, reading novels and hanging out with people I care about.

What motivated you to work hard?

The fear of having to do the Bar Course the second time. I absolutely gave it my best because I did not want to leave room for regret. Whereas I have in the past been a good performing student, this is my first time to be the best because I gave it my all. I was also inspired by some of my colleagues from the previous years who had been on the Director’s List and I aspired to be on it. I also did not want my parents sacrifice to be in vain.

How do you feel with this achievement?

When I first received a call informing me that I had emerged the overall best, I couldn’t believe it! I had set my eyes on making it to the Director’s list but being named the overall best was beyond my wildest expectations. The news filled me with a sense of disbelief, followed by overwhelming joy. This achievement has left me feeling incredibly elated and has bolstered my confidence in my abilities. It is a validation of the hard work and dedication I have put in my endeavours.

However, alongside this joy, I find myself grappling with a sense of anticipation and even anxiety about what lies ahead in the next chapter of my career.

How did you manage to be the best overall?

I approached the entire LDC experience with a positive attitude. I believe that maintaining optimism plays a crucial role in achieving one’s goals. I recognised the importance of going an extra mile. This meant diligently reading through most of the cases on the reading list and engaging in discussions with my peers. Also, having a strong support system kept me sane and motivated throughout the journey. I surrounded myself with like-minded individuals who shared similar goals which allowed us to motivate and uplift each other, especially during times of intense pressure.

Who were your best Professional Advisors and why?

This is a tough one as all of them were exceptional. I will, however, settle with Mr.  Barekensi Franco for his continuous advice during the workshops, Ms. Karungi Betty Gafabusa for her humor, Mr. Nuwagaba Collins for his advice and Ms. Nyangoma Patricia for her enthusiastic teaching.

What advice do you give to the current and future LDC students?

First and foremost, I reassure them that passing the Bar Course is possible. Many have successfully completed it before me, and countless others will do so after me. It is crucial to maintain a positive attitude throughout the LDC experience, as it not only shapes your career but also builds your character.

Secondly, I urge students to understand what methods work best for them individually. Each person’s journey is unique, so it is important to identify study techniques and approaches that yield the best results for you. Remember, doing your best may look different for everyone, so focus on what works for you.

I emphasise the importance of building a strong social network and prioritising self-care. Surround yourself with supportive peers and mentors who can provide guidance and encouragement along the way. Additionally, find healthy ways to manage stress and prevent burnout. Lastly, take time to recharge so as to maintain balance and well-being throughout the Bar Course journey.
